How to Write a CV Personal Statement

A personal statement, also called a professional summary or profile, is the short paragraph at the top of your CV. In a few lines it tells the reader who you are, what you do well and why you fit the role.

What a personal statement is for

Recruiters often skim before they read. The statement gives them a quick reason to keep reading. It is not a life story and it is not a cover letter; it is a compact summary of your strongest, most relevant points.

Keep it to three or four lines. If it grows into a long paragraph, the key message gets lost.

A simple three-part structure

Most good statements answer three questions in order:

  • Who you are: your role or field and your level of experience.
  • What you bring: two or three strengths, skills or achievements that matter for this role.
  • What you want: the type of role or contribution you are aiming for.

Tailor it to the job

A generic statement could belong to anyone. Take the main requirements from the posting and reflect them in your wording, using the same terms where they truthfully describe your work. Rewrite the statement for each application; it takes a few minutes and is the part most readers see first.

Mistakes to avoid

These patterns weaken a statement:

  • Empty adjectives such as "motivated" or "passionate" with nothing to support them.
  • Repeating your job titles from the experience section.
  • Writing in a way that could fit any role.
  • Making it long enough to need scrolling.

Short example to adapt

"Data analyst with five years of experience turning messy operational data into dashboards that managers use weekly. Strong in SQL and Python, and used to explaining findings to non-technical teams. Looking for an analyst role in logistics or e-commerce."

Replace the details with your own real experience; do not copy examples word for word.

Frequently asked questions

In practice yes. Both names describe the short paragraph at the top of a CV; the wording differs by country and recruiter.

Aim for three to four lines. It should be quick to read and focused on the points that matter for the role.

It can help. Focus on your education, relevant projects and the skills you can already show, and say what role you are aiming for.

Many CVs drop the pronoun and use short phrases such as "Data analyst with five years of experience". Either style works if it stays consistent.
